I love granola for breakfast. As a matter of fact, it’s one of the recipes I gave you on the blog post “Seven Simple Food Storage Breakfasts.” When it comes time to make breakfast it’s already ready and at my fingertips. Not that it’s a problem, but the downside to granola is the 15 active minutes of making it and the hour of baking it and all the cleaning up of the pans – that parts the WORST.
But this month’s food storage focus is on using oatmeal. We’re going to hit on a lot of ways to use oatmeal – some of which I bet you’ve never considered before! Today though, we’re going to focus on convenience. Convenience is a wonderful thing now, but an even more important thing during a power outage for instance. Anything that you can do to up your convenience factor so that you can focus your attention on more important things then is a double blessing!
So today, we’re going to talk about homemade oatmeal packets. They are simple to make, cost-effective, and not messy. So that means easy cleanup – SCORE! But if you’re kids are like my kids, what one likes the others hate and sometimes vice-versa. That means that I have to have a lot of different options to what I’m making. I’m going to pass those options on to you.
1/2 C Oats
1 T Brown Sugar or Sucanat (SUgar CANe NATural – It’s sugar with all the minerals still intact.) I buy brown sugar from Costco
Directions: To use the packet, boil 3/4 C of water and add it to your homemade ‘packet.’
1/2 C Oats
1 T Brown sugar
1 T Raisins – I buy these from Costco

1 tsp cocoa powder
1 T chocolate chips – I buy these from Costco

Which version do you think your children would prefer? Which do you think would be your favorite? Oatmeal is something most people have on hand. Give these packets a try and let me know what you think.
Remember, knowledge isn’t just knowing something. It’s living it!
